While many different factors go into a season’s success in bird hunting, the hunter can help to increase his chances of bagging some great trophies. While many hunter’s use many different supplies, some helpful, others not so much, there are a few things that nearly every hunter would consider his essential tools.

One of the greatest tools a hunter can use to draw in birds is the use of the bird call. While these are available for any number of bird species, the hunter will need to purchase a separate call for each one he chooses to hunt. The call works in that the hunter either blows into the instrument, or if using an electronic call, pushes a button, and the call emits the bird’s mating call. Any birds in the area will be drawn to the sound and the hunter will get a chance at bagging some trophies. It is important to note however, that while a call can work great wonders for the hunter, it can also work to scare the birds away if used the wrong way. There are many tools available for the hunter to practice, including instructional videos to help the hunter master his bird call. One of the best things about this bird hunting tool is that they are relatively inexpensive and small to carry.

Another hunter’s go-to item for bird hunting is the decoy. This is a life-like wood or plastic representation of the species being hunted. The bird decoys do vary in quality, and it’s important to get as realistic as you can find as birds often get wise to the use of decoys and can spot intruders. Because birds are social by nature, they often see a flock of decoys and come in for a landing. Using the decoy in conjunction with the bird call can often get the hunter remarkable results. The only downside to using decoys though is the space they take up. Use only what you need; generally speaking, the bigger the flock you’re hunting, they more decoys a hunter should use.
